Department of Wild Animal Diseases
The Department of Wild Animal Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Balıkesir University, was established on March 13, 2024 and commenced its academic activities within the Clinical Sciences Division of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Since 2024, the department has been conducting its educational and clinical services at the Veterinary Faculty Education, Research and Application Hospital located within Çağış Campus, Balıkesir University.
The department currently comprises two academic staff including one Professor and one Assistant Professor. The examination, diagnosis and the treatment of surgical, internal medicine, obstetrical and gynecological diseases of injured and sick wild animals brought to our clinics are performed utilizing the comprehensive technical infrastructure available at the Veterinary Faculty Education, Research, and Application Hospital that includes; radiography, endoscopy, ultrasonography (USG), electrocardiography (ECG) devices, operating theaters, and laboratories.
Undergraduate education and training activities within our department began in the Spring semester of the 2024-2025 academic year and are conducted by the academic staff of the department. Through theoretical and practical training, the department adopts an educational approach that supports the ability to conduct original research and generate new scientific knowledge in this field. The overarching goal is to cultivate wildlife veterinarians and academicians who are well-equipped, possess sufficient practical experience in the field, and are capable of working with scientific methods, thereby addressing the needs across the country.
The primary academic objectives of our department include the initiation of postgraduate education in Wildlife Veterinary Medicine and the contribution to the development of academic staff required in our country by acquiring theoretically and practically proficient academicians. Furthermore, our department aims to establish a center, through collaboration and support from relevant organizations in our country, for the direct purpose of protecting terrestrial and marine wild animal species residing in our region, providing treatment and rehabilitation services when necessary, and directly contributing to the sustainability of wildlife.
